He visits the wards the night before surgery. Just standing at the foot of the bed. He asks patients if they have any loose teeth. Or if they smoke. They usually lie about the smoking. He just writes it down on the pre-op assessment form. The paper is usually attached to a rusty metal clipboard. He checks their airway. Tells them to open their mouth wide. Shines a small penlight in there. Tells them not to drink any water after midnight. They always ask if they will wake up. He just says yes. Probably heard that question a thousand times.

The operating theater is always cold. He wears those faded green scrubs. Probably a bit loose around the shoulders. He stands behind the patient's head. Pushing the white propofol liquid into the IV line. Tells them to count to ten. They fall asleep. He slides the breathing tube down their throat. Tapes it to their cheek with clear medical tape. Then he just sits on a round stool. Watching the monitor. Green and yellow lines moving across the black screen. The surgeons do the cutting. He just makes sure the blood pressure stays okay. Adjusting a dial on the gas machine every now and then. It smells a bit sweet in the room. Surgery finishes. He turns off the gas. Wakes them up. Pushes the stretcher to the recovery room.
