Dr. Farukul Islam

Dr. Farukul Islam works in the eye department at CIMCH. Registrar. He just has his MBBS and some PGT training for now. The eye OPD is usually pretty dark. Heavy curtains pulled over the windows to block out the Chittagong sun. He spends most of his morning sitting behind a slit lamp. That big white machine where you rest your chin. He tells patients to look straight ahead. They always blink too much. He probably gets annoyed but does not say anything. Just shines a bright light into their pupils. Lots of factory workers from the port area come in. Metal dust in their eyes. Or just older people needing reading glasses. He writes down numbers on small cards. Six by six. Or worse. Gives them a tiny plastic bottle of drops. Tells them to put it in twice a day. He does a lot of the prep work before the senior eye surgeons arrive. Putting dilating drops in people's eyes. Then telling them to sit on a wooden bench outside for twenty minutes. Their vision gets blurry. They just sit there rubbing their knees. He checks the eye pressures with a small handheld tool. Sort of looks like a thick pen. Up in the eye OT, things are very quiet. No big machines. Just microscopes. He probably helps drape the patients. Putting that sticky plastic sheet over their face with a hole for one eye. Washing the area with brown iodine. It stains the skin for a few days. He writes the discharge notes later. Hands them out at the nurses station. Tells them to wear dark glasses on the rickshaw ride home. That is it.
