Dr. Md. Abu Bakkar is a registrar in urology at CIMCH. Chittagong. MBBS and MS. Urology wards always smell a bit like ammonia and floor cleaner. Hard to wash that out. He walks past the metal beds. Looking at the plastic bags hanging off the sides. Checking the color of the fluid. Dark yellow means they need more water. Red means bleeding. Pretty simple. Registrars do a lot of the heavy lifting on the ward. He looks at ultrasound reports printed on that thin glossy paper. Mostly kidney stones. People around here probably do not drink enough water in the summer heat. He writes notes on the clipboards. Tells the nurses to flush a blocked catheter. Messy work sometimes. He just puts on rubber gloves. Fixes the tube. Washes his hands at the corner sink. He spends the rest of his shift in the OT. Assisting the senior doctors with prostate cases. Or doing the smaller stuff himself. He uses those long metal scopes. Looking inside bladders on a small monitor. The screen is usually a bit fuzzy. He blasts stones with lasers. Or pulls them out with tiny wire baskets. Sort of looks like a weird video game. Patients complain about the pain a lot. Kidney stones hurt. He just nods. Tells them to drink more fluids when they go home. Maybe prescribes some medicine to relax the muscles. He writes the discharge papers at the nurses station. Stamping his name at the bottom. The blue ink pad is probably drying out. He puts the cap back on his pen.
