Dr. Md. Faridul Islam works with kids. Assistant Professor in paediatric surgery at CIMCH. MBBS and MS. The waiting area outside his room is usually loud. Babies crying. Toddlers running around with half-eaten biscuits. Parents looking tired. The Chittagong heat makes everyone sweat through their clothes. He probably sits behind a wooden desk with a glass top. Maybe some old medical reps calendars on the wall. He checks hernias. Appendix issues in ten year olds. Small things. Sometimes bigger things. Parents always ask too many questions. He just nods. Writes down a prescription for some syrup. Or schedules a minor surgery for Thursday morning. Sort of a noisy job. Kids do not like doctors anyway. They scream when he just tries to feel their stomach. He is used to it. Just waits for them to stop crying. Operating on kids means using tiny instruments. Smaller clamps. Thinner stitches. He scrubs in at the CIMCH pediatric OT. Probably smells like iodine and cheap soap. The nurses have to hold the kids down before the anesthesia kicks in. He fixes whatever is broken inside them. Congenital stuff mostly. Or swallowed coins. Happens a lot. He washes his hands. Takes off the gloves. Goes out to tell the parents it went fine. They usually cry a bit. He just tells them which ward the kid is going to. No big speeches. Just facts. Ward number three. Bed six. Buy these medicines from the pharmacy downstairs. Then he goes back to his room. Drinks some lukewarm water from a plastic bottle. Looks at the next file.
