He probably sits in a small room. The walls might need a new coat of paint. A squeaky ceiling fan. He looks at bilirubin numbers on those thin lab printouts. Just running his pen down the page. He asks them if they feel tired. They always say yes. Liver problems make you tired. He just nods. Writes down some medicine. Tells them to boil their drinking water. Simple advice.

He does the physical checks too. Pressing on the right side of the stomach. Feeling if the liver is swollen. Sometimes older patients have fluid in their belly. Ascites. He just taps on it with his fingers. Sort of sounds like a dull drum. He looks at ultrasound scans. Black and white pictures of organs printed on glossy paper. He tells the junior doctors what to look for. Just pointing at the screen with the back of his pen. He prescribes some antivirals for the hepatitis guys. Small bottles of pills. Tells them to come back in three months with new blood tests. They take the paper. He puts his stamp on it. The ink is probably blue. Calls the next one.
