Dr. Mostofa Zahid Kamal (Bipu )

Dr Mostofa Zahid Kamal is a cardiovascular surgeon. Most people just call him Dr Bipu. He has an MS in Cardiovascular surgery. That is a heavy degree. It means he actually operates on hearts and blood vessels instead of just giving out medicine. His chamber is usually full of patients who already saw another doctor first. They get referred to him when things get complicated. People bring in thick files with angiogram CDs and echo reports. They sit on the chairs looking pretty tense. Heart surgery is a big deal. He calls them in. Puts the CD in his computer. Clicks through the moving black and white images of the heart.

He does not rush the appointment. Explaining a bypass surgery takes time. He draws a little diagram on a blank piece of paper to show where the block is. Tells the family what needs to be done. The relatives usually ask a lot of questions about the cost and the risk. He answers them. Straightforward. No sugarcoating. If surgery is not needed yet, he just adjusts their medicine and tells them to come back in six months. He writes the prescription. Hands back the angiogram CD. Tells the family to think about it and let him know. Then the next patient comes in. He just does his job.
