Dr. Samiul Hasan is an associate professor. Pediatric surgery. MBBS and MS. The waiting area outside his room is always loud. Kids running around or crying. Parents looking tired. He probably sits behind a regular wooden desk. Maybe a broken plastic toy on the corner. Just to distract the toddlers. They usually cry anyway when he tries to examine them. He checks for hernias. Or appendix issues. Small bodies. He just presses on their stomachs. The kids scream. He is used to it. Just waits for them to stop. Writes down some tests on a pad. Tells the parents they need a minor operation. They always ask a lot of questions. He just nods. Gives short answers.

Operating on babies means using tiny tools. Smaller clamps. Thinner thread. Up in the pediatric OT it smells like iodine and cheap soap. The nurses have to hold the kids down before the anesthesia kicks in. He fixes whatever is wrong inside. Swallowed coins. Congenital stuff. Sort of tedious work. He probably stands there for a couple of hours. Sweating a bit under the lights. He finishes the stitches. Just tiny knots. Takes off his gloves. Throws them in the red plastic bin. Goes out to the waiting room. Tells the parents it went fine. No big speeches. Just says the kid is waking up. He goes to wash his hands.
