Lt. Col. Dr. Md. Sajedur Rahman

Lt. Col. Dr. Md. Sajedur Rahman is an eye doctor. Senior consultant in ophthalmology. He has that military rank. Probably means he sits up very straight in his chair. He did his DO at Dhaka University. Then got an MD in Germany. Germany is pretty far. Now he just sits in a dark room all day. Eye clinics are always dark. Heavy blinds on the windows. He uses that big white machine. The slit lamp. Tells people to put their chin on the plastic rest. They always pull back when the bright light hits their eye. He just tells them to stay still. Sort of a strict voice maybe. He looks at the back of their retinas. Checking for cataracts. Or damage from diabetes. Just writes down numbers on a small card. Six by nine. Six by twelve.

Up in the eye OT it is very quiet. No big machines beeping. Just the microscope. He does the cataract surgeries. Older people mostly. They lie down under a bright light. He puts numbing drops in their eyes. No general anesthesia. Just awake the whole time. He uses tiny metal tools. Pulls out the cloudy lens. Puts a clear plastic one in. Takes maybe fifteen minutes. Pretty much a routine for him by now. He tapes a plastic shield over their eye. Tells them not to rub it. They probably rub it anyway when it gets itchy. He writes the discharge slip. Prescribes some antibiotic drops. Takes off his gloves. Washes his hands.
