Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Taher

Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Taher is a Professor of Colorectal Surgery with a career spanning more than three decades. He graduated from Rangpur Medical College in 1994 and completed MS in General Surgery from BSMMU in 2008. His qualifications also include FISCP from India, FASCRS and FACS from the USA, and FRCS from Glasgow, UK.

His surgical career began at the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital in Dhaka in 1997. He later worked at the former IPGMR and BSMMU, gaining extensive experience in General, Hepato-biliary, and Endocrine Surgery. From 2010 to 2013, he served in Botswana as Head of Surgery and Casualty at Mahalapye District Hospital, a 250-bed facility.

Since 2013, his professional focus has been Colorectal Surgery at BSMMU. He performs colorectal procedures through open, laparoscopic, and LASER techniques. He is also recognized for his work in LASER colorectal surgery in Bangladesh. Upper and lower GIT endoscopy, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, is another area of his practice.

Prof. Dr. Abu Taher is involved in teaching FCPS and MS students, thesis supervision, seminars, symposiums, and surgical workshops. He has around 30 national and three international publications. He has also held organizational roles in surgical societies, including SELSB, BSCRS, and the Society of Surgeons of Bangladesh.
