Prof. Dr. Md. Amir Hossain

Prof. Md. Amir Hossain is a professor of medicine down in Chittagong. MBBS and FCPS. Being a professor means he has been doing this a long time. His office probably has one of those heavy wooden doors that sticks at the bottom. The waiting area is always full of medical reps holding shiny brochures. He just lets them talk for a minute. Takes the free pen. Puts it in a mug with twenty other pens. Patients come in with a bit of everything. Long fevers. Stomach issues. He just looks at their old prescriptions. The paper is usually soft from being folded too many times. He asks a few questions. Sort of mumbles. Does not use big medical words. Just tells them to stop eating street food.

He does the big ward rounds on Tuesdays. A whole line of junior doctors trailing behind him. The medicine ward smells like damp clothes and floor cleaner. He stops at a bed. Asks a student to check the liver. The student probably messes it up. He just sighs. Shows them how to press under the ribs properly. Just routine teaching. He checks the patient's pulse. Looking at his watch. A silver watch with a scratched face. He tells the registrar to keep the IV running for another day. Maybe add a vitamin pill. Nothing fancy. Just basic medicine. He finishes the row. Signs the chart. Goes to wash his hands.
