Prof. Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam

Prof. Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam is a Professor of Hepatology and a specialist in Medicine and Therapeutic Endoscopy. He completed his MBBS and pursued postgraduate training with FCPS in Medicine and MD in Hepatology. His career includes more than three decades of medical experience, with academic and clinical roles at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

His specialist field covers liver diseases as well as gastrointestinal conditions requiring endoscopic assessment. Fatty liver, viral hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, liver cancer, and metabolic liver disorders are among the conditions associated with his area of expertise. Liver problems may also require long-term monitoring through blood tests and imaging.

Therapeutic endoscopy forms another part of his professional work. Unlike a routine diagnostic examination, therapeutic endoscopy can be used for procedures such as managing gastrointestinal bleeding, removing polyps, treating bile duct problems, and placing stents when clinically indicated. These techniques can provide treatment without conventional open surgery in selected cases.

Prof. Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam has served as Professor and Head of Department at BSMMU and later took on the role of Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) at BMU in 2024. Earlier in his career, he worked as a Medical Officer at an Upazilla Health Complex and served as a resident from 2001 to 2003. His chamber is listed at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka.
