Prof. Dr. S. M Amjad Hossain is the head of surgery. MBBS and FCPS. Being the department head means a lot of paperwork. Signing duty rosters. Approving leave for the junior doctors. His office probably has a big wooden desk. Scratched on the edges. A faded anatomy poster on the wall behind him. The corners curling up. People come to him when the smaller clinics mess up. Bad hernias. Bowel obstructions. He just looks at the messy referral notes. The blue ink is usually smudged. He pushes his glasses up. Asks the patient a few questions. Sort of grunts. Writes down an admission order. Just basic instructions. Get a bed in ward number two.

He leads the big surgical rounds on Thursdays. A massive crowd of students and registrars following him. The ward smells like iodine and old bandages. He stops at a bed. Pulls back the sheet to look at a wound. Tells a third year student to change the dressing. The student probably drops the gauze. He just shakes his head. Up in the OT, he takes the big cases. The ones that take three hours. He stands under the bright lights. Sweating a bit. The nurses know exactly which clamp he wants before he even asks. Years of routine. He cuts out the bad tissue. Ties the knots fast. Thick black thread. He finishes the surgery. Takes off the heavy gown. Leaves it on the floor. Washes his hands.
