Prof. Dr. Shah Alam is a senior consultant. Ophthalmology. MBBS and FCPS. Being a professor means he has probably looked at thousands of eyes by now. His clinic room is dark. Just the light from the slit lamp machine. The plastic chin rest is probably worn out from so many people leaning on it. Older folks come in from the villages. Blurry vision. They sit on the metal chair. He tells them to look at his ear. They always look at the light instead. He just sighs a bit. Adjusts the joystick on the machine. He checks for cataracts. Just a cloudy white circle in the middle of the eye. He writes down the surgery date on a small slip of paper. Hands it to the relatives. They ask if it will hurt. He says no. Just a prick.

Up in the operating room it is mostly just routine. Eye surgeries do not take long. Maybe twenty minutes. He sits on a stool with wheels. Looking through a large microscope hanging over the bed. He uses numbing drops. No big anesthesia. He makes a tiny cut. Breaks up the old cloudy lens with a machine that hums quietly. Sucks it out. Puts a folded plastic lens in. It unfolds inside the eye. Sort of like a tiny umbrella. He does not even need stitches most of the time. Just tapes a clear plastic shield over the eye with white medical tape. Tells them to keep water out of it for a few days. He takes off his mask. Washes his hands at the corner sink. Goes to the next bed.
