Dr. Mohd. Mohiuddin Ahmed is a registrar in orthopedic surgery at CIMCH. Down in Chittagong. MBBS and MD. Orthopedics is mostly just broken bones and plaster dust. The ward probably smells like wet chalk and Dettol. He spends a lot of time looking at X-rays. Holding the black films up to the ceiling light because the light box is broken. Just checking if the femur is straight. Registrars do a lot of the heavy work. Running between the emergency room and the OT. Lots of motorcycle accidents on the Chittagong roads. People coming in with crushed ankles. He writes the admission notes. Orders the painkillers. Tells the nurses to prep them for surgery. Probably wears scrubs that have a few old stains on the knees. Just moving from bed to bed. The operating room for ortho is loud. Sounds more like a carpentry shop. Drills whining. Hammers hitting metal pins. He assists the senior surgeons or handles the smaller fractures himself. Putting in screws. Wrapping fiberglass casts. It takes a lot of physical strength to pull a dislocated shoulder back into place. He probably sweats a lot under the heavy lead aprons they wear for the X-ray machine. Just wiping his forehead with the back of his arm. Patients usually complain about the heavy casts. He just tells them to keep it dry. Come back in three weeks. No long explanations about bone healing. Just basic instructions. Take the calcium pills. Keep the leg elevated. Then he goes to wash the plaster off his hands.
